Instagram’s Influencer Marketing Trends for 2023

March 29, 2023
Adrienne Kruger

“Urgh, Influencer Instagram marketing trends are so January!” Wrong. They’re oh-so March and beyond.

Here are the Instagram trends that have survived the first quarter, along with some new announcements made by our fave, Adam Mosseri (aka Head of Instagram). Brand managers and influencers take note, save this, share it, print it or whatever - just make the things below happen:

7 Instagram Marketing Trends for Influencers & Brand Managers in 2023

  1. IG Broadcast Features
  2. Brand collabs & affiliations
  3. More User-generated Content
  4. Storytelling
  5. More Boosted Content
  6. Verification
  7. Power of Reels

Trend 1: IG Broadcast Features

Last month our friends at IG launched the one-to-many messaging system. But what does this mean? Well, influencers and brands can now communicate directly with their fans and followers in just a few clicks! So be one of the first to slide into many DMs without having to copy and paste.

Trend 2: Brand Collabs and Affiliations

Collabs are here to stay - especially when considering a recent report shared by the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), which stated that 64% of consumers felt that brands became more trustworthy when influencers endorsed them. And vice versa, 58% of those surveyed felt that influencers themselves became more trustworthy when they endorsed a specific brand.

It’s a win-win, and word on the web is that IG wants in on monetary incentives for creators and brands to turn their skills into a living! There’s talk of the app making it easier for everyone to get involved with collab features, Creator Marketplace and various other tools. Watch this space…

Trend 3: More User-generated Content

Can we get an amen to this Instagram influencer marketing trend?

Before 2023, user-generated content (UGC) was focused more on content created organically (not paid for) by a brand’s followers. But from now on, a UGC creator or influencer can create content that looks like it’s UGC - but actually, it’s been paid for.

From a brand’s perspective, this content switch promises a cost-effective solution to create way more content. And for the creator and influencers? You’re getting paid to be authentically you to drive sales and traffic to a brand’s site.

Trend 4: Storytelling

We said it in June 2022 and we’ll say it again: storytelling is an Instagram content trend that’s a biggie! Check out the full scoop and art of storytelling here.

According to the ASCI report: “transparency and honesty stood out as the key reasons why consumers trust influencers on social media (63%), followed by relatable content (57%), and personal stories (53%).”

The best way to make sure that as a brand you’re working with the right influencers, and as an influencer you’re creating the right content, is through storytelling. IG users are finding greater content value from people who mirror their lives or experiences.

Therefore, make yourself or your brand relatable AF to your audience and engagement and sales will naturally follow.

Trend 5: More Boosted Content

Ching ching, getting paid over here - especially, if you’re boosting content.

A while back IG made the decision to scale back some of its e-comm tools (e.g. they removed the shopping icon from the menu).

That’s why if you’re a brand you may want to jump on the boosted spend trend, as it’s a great way to extend your reach and improve your conversions on the gram.

According to Finances Online, 89% of marketers consider IG as the most NB platform for influencer marketing strategies. This explains why user spending on IG ads is 23% higher than that of the world’s biggest social media site, Facebook.

Trend 6: Verification

This next trend hasn’t reached Mzansi just yet, but that’s not to say you shouldn’t keep an eye on it.

On Feb 19, 2023, Meta announced that it was “testing Meta verified to help creators establish their presence.”

This new subscription bundle will include account verification (no more hacks or impersonations) and access to increased support and visibility. The goal here is for influencers to build stronger and bigger communities on Facebook and Instagram.

For now, this tool is being tested in Australia and New Zealand, but will roll out to the rest of the world once it has been perfected.

Trend 7: The Power of Reels

ICYMI: Last year, IG made video content appear as reels, so while this isn’t exactly a new influencer marketing trend, it’s something you should continue doing in 2023.

Reels are a great way to story-tell and are the ultimate engagement ‘hack.’ But there is also a fine balance, as good old static photos are still goodies and should be incorporated into social media planning.
