From One Influencer Marketer to Another: Quality Trumps Quantity - Always.

July 28, 2022

Quality trumps quantity. Every. Single. Damn. Time. Unless it's a 2 for 1 special or you're adding kale to a morning smoothie, then focus on getting more! But for almost everything else, quality will always be the gold standard - especially in content and influencer marketing strategies.

If you've followed us on IG or FB this July, you'd have seen some of our thoughts on quality versus quantity. It's now time to spill the tea on everything else you need to know about quality content creation and influencer marketing.

1. Why Should You Focus on Quality Over Quantity in Content Creation?

Think about the most annoying adverts - they're generally in-your-face, at the start of every YouTube video, TV commercial or the minute you switch on your car. How on earth could a brand drop cash on an advert that's so weak? But it happens - sometimes to the best brands.

Back in the day, infomercials sold, pushing messaging until it drowned out the sound of logic. This tactic seemed to work, but in 2022 consumers are far more suspicious and savvy with their hard-earned cash; they're looking for brands who listen to them, not the other way round.

The best way to build brand awareness is through quality content creation - and we're not talking about pleasing the ever-changing algorithms with posting every day. We're talking about conceptual messaging that resonates with followers.

Brands must focus on converting features into benefits - influencers can help by sharing their experiences. For more info on how to do this, read our blog on the art of storytelling so that your posts are more engaging than boring.

That leads us to our next point: how to work smarter and not harder with your content.

2. Keep It Chill and Simple.

"When you say three things, you say nothing. When your remote control has fifty buttons, you can't change the channel anymore." - Chip and Dan Heath in Made to Stick.

Relatable? Defos! Stick to the rule of one idea and let it dominate per campaign. We get it; it's so tempting to just say a million things - after all, you're passionate about your brand, and the world is missing out! But trust us, keep it to one message and one call to action; people get confused real quick - especially when it's influencer giveaways and competitions. We've seen first-hand that the simpler the idea, the better the campaign, and we're serving up some serious inspo here.

This has worked for us when it comes to narrowing ideas down to one simple concept and message. It may seem head-bangingly obvious, but it's something we see so many overlook:

  • Identify what the primary goal of the campaign is.
  • What human behaviour do we want to change / highlight?
  • Who are we speaking to?
  • Why should our audience care?

Asking these simple questions helps brands create a clear-cut, simple message.

3. "It's a Numbers Game" - Mmm, Not Necessarily in Influencer Marketing…

As a specialised influencer marketing agency based in Cape Town, we know how to leverage the macros, micros and nanos for a brand influencer strategy. There's a time and place for everything, but we're starting to see that micro-influencers hold greater power than ever before. Don't believe us? Read this article for background on why quality also trumps quantity in the influencer game.

According to the Digital Marketing Institute, 70% of teens trust influencers over traditional celebrities, and 86% of women use social media for purchasing advice. In addition to these eye-watering stats, 49% of consumers depend on influencer recommendations. So what does this mean to you as a marketing manager or brand? You need to focus on working alongside quality niche-based influencers who can get you the desired results.

At People Have Influence, we only work with influencers who are the real deal and who are so much more than a "sponsored by" post. They're hard workers, movers and shakers, and that is where we align well. We identify influencers who can elevate your brand without it feeling "paid for." FYI, we only work with influencers who have a mix of branded content and their own personal content and who have real followers that aren't robots and who engage, share and 'like' their content.

We don't just talk about quality over quantity; we walk the talk from the start of a campaign (sourcing, vetting and profiling influencers), to the campaign BIG IDEA… and then over to the very end in which we present a final post campaign report to the client, highlighting how well the campaign did.

We also ensure that quality influencers represent your brand. We look out for follower engagement rates and the type of content produced, and if it's authentic and relatable to followers. As advocates for quality over quantity, we know that time is money, so if you'd like to learn more about how exactly we monitor influencer campaign successes, read this blog.

4. Don't Be A Sheep

Just because your competitors are on every social media platform, or using every billboard or media placement, doesn't mean that you should do it too. Focus on what works and makes sense for you and your brand. So many brands opt to jostle for air time on super-crowded media channels when in actual fact, all they need to focus on is influencer marketing, where a single campaign can render the best results with a high ROI.

With the influencer marketing industry expected to hit  $13.8bn in 2022, you don't want to get left behind. At People Have Influence, we go all in on your brand campaigns. We believe the magic happens when an influencer campaign forms part of a much bigger digital marketing strategy.
