The what, how and why of influencer marketing

Influencer marketing. It’s on the rise and it’s in the news, but do you know exactly what it’s purpose is? Or why it even matters?

Put simply, influencer marketing, when done correctly, is one of the most effective ways for brands to connect with their audiences authentically. Chances are, you already encounter influencer marketing every single day, and you may not even know it.

So what exactly is influencer marketing?

Influencer marketing, or IM as it is often referred to, is a form of marketing that taps into an already engaged audience through the use of people who endorse and advocate brands. It’s one of the best ways to drive authentic conversations with real people.

And it’s been used for decades, by marketers worldwide.

The old form of influencer marketing used celebrity endorsements, which since then, has not seen the same kind of success as modern influencer marketing. That’s because people are no longer that bothered about big-name celebrities, and can see right through the marketing campaign. Instead, people are searching for genuine suggestions to products and want to align themselves with brands they find similar to themselves.

What’s also important to note is that most influencers will only get involved in a campaign with a brand if they genuinely believe in the product they’re promoting. This is what makes influencer marketing so authentic, especially with the many passionate causes individuals are following in today’s ever-growing trends.

“But who is an influencer?” you might ask. Well, according to Sprout Social, an influencer can be categorized as some in a niche or industry, with sway over a target audience. They have specialised knowledge, authority and insight into specific subject matter and their pre-existing presence in a specific niche make them a useful launching pad for brands that are looking for credibility. And they don’t necessarily have to have a large following either.

Definitions aside, here at People Have Influence, influencers are our family, and we know them each on a personal level, carefully choosing and matching brands and influencers by a specific criteria every time.

How does influencer marketing work?

As mentioned, when a brand uses an influencer, they are able to communicate to an already engaged niche audience. This is why influencer marketing is a highly effective way to relay a brand message to a very specific niche audience, especially in 2020. And it boils down to this;

People trust people more than they trust brands.

Instead of spending their budget on more ads that aren’t converting, brands are exploring how impactful their marketing can be when they let people speak on their behalf. When used over time, this message builds trust in consumers by reaching them on their level, every single time.

We’re all searching for a little connection, now more than ever before. Using influencer marketing allows you to make a real connection with your target audience that transcends traditional marketing and even traditional digital marketing.

Watch as the influencers you choose relay your message and spread it to the world you want to enter into. Your brand message will be transformed in a way that is genuine, authentic and just right.

Remember, influencers “talk” to their audience every single day, and they know exactly what their audience likes, doesn’t like, and what they respond well to.

Why does it matter?

When people are involved, marketing always feels so much more real. And let’s face it, the goal of marketing is always to create awareness around your brand, in order to gain more customers. What better way than to put your brand right in front of them with the people they are most inspired by?

But the proof is in the pudding too. When you partner with the right influencer marketing agency, like us, you can enjoy reporting software that detects fake followers and likes, as well as in-depth sourcing, profiling and vetting, finding the right people that will ensure your campaign always remains genuine.

Follow a live report on the campaign metrics, so you can track the success, conversions and engagement, in real-time.

Let us help you take your next influencer marketing campaign to the next level. We’ll work hand-in-hand together from concept and ideation to profiling, sourcing and vetting based on your specific target market criteria. Once everything is set in stone, we’ll walk you through the content-management, tracking and reporting so that you can watch the conversations grow and skyrocket.
